Free Kids Fishing Workshop: Learn to Fish in Your Local Waterways

There’s something special about a child’s first catch — the excitement, the patience, and the connection to nature that stays with them long after the line is reeled in. That’s exactly what Nelson Bay Boat Hire & Watersports is inviting families to experience at our FREE Kids Fishing Workshop, designed especially for children aged 8–14 years.

Hosted at MIZU Leisure and Sports, this hands-on, two-hour workshop is all about giving kids the confidence, skills, and knowledge to start fishing safely and responsibly in their local waterways.

What the Workshop Includes

Our Kids Fishing Workshop is led by knowledgeable instructors and supported by Fishcare Volunteers, with funding from the Recreational Fishing Trusts. Throughout the session, kids will learn:

• How to rig up a fishing rod

• Basic knot tying skills

• Fishing safety and best practices

• Correct casting techniques

• A practical, guided fishing session

• Tips on fishing responsibly

• Correct catch and release techniques

• Advice from local fishing experts on getting started in the area

Best of all, all equipment is supplied on the day, so no prior experience or gear is required. Each participant will also take home their own rod and reel, plus a goodie bag, so the fun can continue well beyond the workshop.

Who Can Attend?

• Open to children aged 8–14 years

• Bookings are essential, as places are limited

• Each child must be accompanied by a responsible adult (minimum of one parent or guardian per family group) to assist during the practical fishing session

This ensures a safe, supportive, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

A Focus on Safety & Community

The workshop promotes not only fishing skills, but also respect for the environment and local waterways. We ask families to please not attend if anyone is unwell or displaying cold or flu symptoms, to help keep everyone safe.
