Look Up! Spotting White-bellied Sea Eagles Around Port Stephens
There’s plenty to look for when you’re out on the water around Port Stephens. Keep an eye on the coastline, the trees and, most importantly, the sky, and you may spot one of the region’s most impressive coastal birds: the White-bellied Sea Eagle.
With its distinctive white head and underparts, grey wings and broad wingspan, this large bird of prey is closely associated with coastal waterways. And when you’re exploring Port Stephens by boat, you’re in a great position to see the landscape these remarkable birds call home.
Meet the White-bellied Sea Eagle
The White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) is a large bird of prey found around Australia's coastline and near many large inland waterways.
Adult birds are recognisable by their white head, breast and belly, contrasting with their darker grey wings and back. They have long, broad wings and a short, wedge-shaped tail, with a wingspan of around 1.8 to 2 metres.
Young White-bellied Sea Eagles look quite different. Juveniles are predominantly brown with lighter markings and gradually develop their distinctive adult colouring over several years.
Why are they found around Port Stephens?
White-bellied Sea Eagles are strongly associated with waterways, including coastal waters, rivers, lakes and wetlands.
Port Stephens offers a combination of open water, islands, wetlands, forest and coastal habitat. These environments provide opportunities for feeding, resting and nesting.
When you're out on the bay, you may see a sea eagle perched high in a tree overlooking the water or soaring above the coastline. Their elevated vantage points allow them to scan the surrounding area for potential prey.
What do White-bellied Sea Eagles eat?
Fish are an important part of their diet, but they're far from the only thing these birds eat.
White-bellied Sea Eagles can also prey on waterbirds, reptiles, mammals and freshwater turtles. They will also feed on carrion when the opportunity arises.
When hunting, they may soar above the water before swooping down to capture prey, or watch from a perch before making their move.
Look up while you're out on the water
One of the best things about exploring Port Stephens by boat is the opportunity to see the coastline from a different perspective.
While you're watching the water for dolphins or keeping an eye out for fur seals, don't forget to look up.
A White-bellied Sea Eagle might be perched high above the shoreline or gliding effortlessly overhead. Their broad wings and contrasting white head and body can make them surprisingly easy to identify once you know what you're looking for.
Of course, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. That's part of the adventure of exploring a natural environment.
A species worth protecting
White-bellied Sea Eagles are an important part of Australia's coastal ecosystems. In NSW, the species is listed as Vulnerable under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.
One of the challenges they face is disturbance and loss of suitable nesting habitat. Sea Eagles build large stick nests, often in tall trees close to their feeding areas, and may return to the same nest over many breeding seasons.
This makes responsible wildlife viewing particularly important.
Give wildlife plenty of space
If you spot a White-bellied Sea Eagle while you're out on the bay, enjoy the sighting from a respectful distance.
Avoid approaching nesting sites or repeatedly circling a perched bird. Slowing down and giving wildlife space means you can enjoy the encounter without unnecessarily disturbing it.
